De-stressing holidays and ADHD Conference

Happy holiday season to all! I have some great tips in this issue for getting through celebrations with less and a brief report on a major ADHD conference in Chicago.

Organization Help for Families with ADHD / ADD
Earlier this month I attended the Annual International Conference on ADHD hosted by Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD ). I heard two terrific speakers talk about working with children with ADHD / ADD and wanted to share a summary of things I learned.
My big takeaway from this conference is that there’s lots of help out there. So parents, don’t give up even if you’ve tried a dozen ways that don’t seem pay off. Kids with attention deficit have real struggles with organization. That’s not news. But did you know that the ability to self-start is also a major challenge? This is why the command, “clean your room!” doesn’t yield much return.

A strategy called Body Doubling is used by coaches to help the child or adult start a project and stick with it. You wouldn’t tell a blind person to “look harder” so they can see. You’d guide them safely towards their destination.  Body doubling works the same way. The simple presence of another person in the room can allow the child to start and keep working. A coach or organizer can keep them on track and keep the goal in focus without the inevitable parent-child arguments. The highly visual Time Timer demonstrates how much time is passing – yet another challenge for ADD kids to grasp.

So don’t get discouraged. Keep at it, coach your kids and ask for help. Studies show it takes 66 times to make a new habit, so patience is advised.
Here are a few more external reminder tips for the attention-challenged:

  • Post-it notes and other visual reminders
  • Texts to oneself
  • Phone calls or voicemails
  • Printed lists
  • Consistent places to put things (labeling helps)
